(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Desert Foothills Land Trust Announces Finalists in
2013 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest
(North Valley, AZ) – Desert Foothills Land Trust is pleased to announce the finalists in the 2013 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest! Professional photographers Alan Lowy, Kazu Okutomi, Richard Rubenstein, Jerry Sieve and Mike Spinelli reviewed more than 100 photos in order to select 13 entries that best encourage a deeper appreciation for the unique characteristics of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain – the landmarks at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities.
The finalists are: Deanna Bailey, Thomas M. Baker, Mike Burns, Mark Carroll, Jay Chatzkel, Michael Graham, Herbert Hitchon, Bob Hughes, Americo Longo, Jeremy Manganelli, Tammy E. Manganelli, Michelle Nicholas, and Andreas Schmalz.
The photos are now on public display for viewing and voting for the “People’s Choice Award.” The photos were first shown at Anthem Autumnfest on October 26 and 27, and can be seen at the North Valley Regional Library from October 29-November 1 and the Cave Creek Museum from November 4-10. The photos will then move to the Desert Foothills Library on November 11. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will end on November 15, but the display will remain at the Library through early December. Voting will also be available on the Land Trust’s Facebook page. Community members are invited to visit, vote and enjoy these wonderful photos!
The photographer’s top picks and the People's Choice Award winner will be announced at an awards reception for entrants on December 4. All photos will be used in the 2014 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest calendar, which will be unveiled at that reception. Calendars will be available for sale after that reception – just in time for holiday gift-giving! The coveted cover of the calendar will be the People’s Choice Award-winning photograph.
By calling attention to the beauty and majesty of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain, Desert Foothills Land Trust hopes to emphasize the importance of land conservation in our communities. For more information about the 2013 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest, please visit www.dflt.org.

Whiskers & Wine Tickets On Sale Now!!
As many of you may know, I am the chair of the Board of Directors for the Foothills Animal a (FAR) in Scottsdale. Each year, through generous donations, our thriving resale boutique, grants, and fundraisers, we have the privilege of rescuing, caring for, and adopting out hundreds of cats and dogs and creating lifelong friendships for all involved.
On the evening of Thursday November 21st, we are holding our second annual Whiskers and Wine event in Carefree.
I would like to humbly ask for your support in purchasing tickets and joining me at this event. There will be wine and beer, live music, food, 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction featuring the work of our own Mitch Henderson. To date, we have several thousand dollars’ worth of donations for the silent auction.
I cannot stress how much your support means to the rescue, and most importantly to the animals in our care. If you cannot attend, I understand (and there are more events coming up!). If you would like to volunteer at the rescue, please let me know.
Most importantly, if you would like to adopt I will put you in contact with an adoption counselor.

Hi, Lyn,
I've heard from many Carefree Kiwanis that they follow "Carefree Truth" religiously and feel strongly about having Kiwanis Club of Carefree events and "good news" stories appear in the publication.
Attached is the media release for the next Carefree Kiwanis Flea Market (including the new hours for the Carefree Kiwanis Marketplace). The Flea Market is Saturday, December 7, 8am to 1pm. (If it rains, the rain day is the following Saturday, December 14.)
Thank you for your support. It is much appreciated.

Kiwanis Club of Carefree Flea Market & Marketplace
Saturday, December 7, 2013
8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There are loads and loads of furnishings, electronics, exercise equipment, housewares, clothing, accessories and collectibles waiting to be scooped up at the Carefree Kiwanis Flea Market on Saturday, December 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“The warehouse is full of gently used merchandise that must be moved out, “ said Ron Junier, who chairs the Carefree Kiwanis Flea Market and Marketplace with Anne Hilton. “We are constantly picking up entire households of furnishings, including electronics and sporting goods.”
“People retire and downsize or move into resort homes and find that their traditional furniture doesn’t suit their new Southwestern space. They redecorate and donate, literally, complete rooms of furniture and artwork to us,” said Hilton. Our community youth programs benefit from their donations and shoppers get incredible bargains.”
To schedule a donation pick-up or to volunteer at the Flea Market warehouse, please call the Kiwanis Club of Carefree at 480.488.8400. The Carefree Kiwanis Flea Market is located at Dave Anderson Memorial Building, 7177 E. Ed Everett Way in Cave Creek (southwest corner of Tom Darlington and Cave Creek Road).
Quality clothing, accessories, jewelry, artwork, collectibles (perhaps the perfect Holiday gift) and unique pieces of furniture can be found at the Carefree Kiwanis Marketplace, across the parking lot from the Flea Market. The Marketplace is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Special sales take place throughout the month.
The Marketplace is located at 7171 Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek. Look for the large Kiwanis Club of Carefree Marketplace signs.
Cash, credit cards and checks (with I.D.) will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the Youth Programs of Kiwanis Club of Carefree, a 501.c3 organization. For more information or to volunteer with the Kiwanis Club of Carefree, call 480.488.8400 or visit www.kiwaniscarefree.org
* Please note that featured merchandise is available as of this date and is presented only as an example of what is available and may be sold prior to sale day.

A cultural tradition since 1952: Desert Foothills Christmas Pageant
December 7 & 8, 2013 – 7pm - at Spur Cross Ranch
Sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Carefree
The first weekend of December, Cave Creek once again hosts the annual Desert Foothills Christmas Pageant, delighting hundreds of spectators. “The volunteer efforts of many people from our local communities result in the continuation of this fine tradition,” said Toby Payne, longtime supporter and organizer of the Pageant.
“There wouldn’t be a Pageant without the volunteer crews who set everything up and help run the event; local youth and adults in the cast and choir; animal owners; and the ‘angels’ - Kiwanis Key Club members from Cactus Shadows High School, Foothills Academy and Notre Dame Prep - who place and the light the five-plus miles of beautiful luminaria leading to the Pageant site at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area,” said Payne.
“A heartfelt ‘Thank you’ goes to everyone who participated in prior years, especially the Town of Cave Creek for improving the site,” commented Frank Tyrol, 2013-2014 President of the Kiwanis Club of Carefree.
The Desert Foothills Christmas Pageant was started by the local 4-H Club in Cave Creek in 1952, as a re-enactment of the Christmas story showcasing the 4-H Club members’ animals. The tradition continues on December 7 and 8,
7 p.m. at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area in Cave Creek.
Area residents perform in the choir and in pantomime. There is a live, occasionally stubborn, donkey for Mary, and the Three Kings travel on horseback. “Thank you, Evelyn Holbrook, Director of Education & Community Services at CCUSD, for your many years of wrangling the Kings and their horses,” said Payne, “not to mention the donkey!”
A majestic-voiced narrator presides over the Christmas story with beautiful musical accompaniment provided by the Pageant choir. Locals enact the roles of Mary, Joseph, infant Jesus, angel, townspeople, shepherds, and Kings.
Volunteers handle all aspects of the Pageant, from ground prep, sound tech and sets, to luminaria placement and critter coordination. “Community is what the whole Pageant is about. Everyone is welcome,” said a participant.
Admission and parking are free.
Because there is no built-in seating, bring a blanket to sit up close on the ground or a portable chair. Wear warm clothes and walking shoes. A flashlight is useful because the Spur Cross Ranch is illuminated primarily by the moon and stars.
Directions: Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area is located approximately 35 miles north of central Phoenix. Interstate 17, State Route 51, and Loop 101 can all be used to reach the park. From the intersection of Carefree Highway and Cave Creek Road head north on Cave Creek Road about 2.5 miles to Spur Cross Road. Turn north for approximately 4.5 miles to the public parking area. After 3 miles the road turns to all-weather graded. 44000 N Spur Cross Rd, Cave Creek, AZ 85331
